Plot
Spring ploughing of 1978 was around the corner, when the only Dongfanghong tractor of Hongqi Production Team suddenly broke down, threatening the village’s entire spring harvest. Farm mechanic Lu Changshan stayed up working nonstop for over twenty hours to fix the machine. Starving, he drank a bowl of leftover sweet potato porridge from the canteen. However, Hu Sanbao, nephew of the team leader, falsely accused him of stealing collective food rations. Team leader Gao Mancang favored his relative and believed the accusation. He publicly deducted Lu Changshan’s work points and revoked his model worker qualification. Disheartened, Lu Changshan strictly adhered to official regulations. He refused to perform any unofficial maintenance without work orders and material slips. Hidden mechanical faults that Lu Changshan used to fix proactively surfaced one after another. Tractors and water pumps malfunctioned continuously, pushing the whole team into a crisis of delayed farming and reduced yields.
